HELINA – Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) of India

By Lalita Bhauryal | Missiles | Dec 16, 2025

HELINA (Helicopter-Launched Nag) is a fire-and-forget Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) of advanced third-generation, developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation of India (DRDO) under the indigenous Nag missile program. Designed specifically for launch from attack helicopters, HELINA significantly enhances India’s air-to-ground anti-armor warfare capability. It is engineered to accurately engage and destroy modern main battle tanks, armored vehicles, and fortified enemy positions under diverse battlefield conditions.

Equipped with an advanced imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, HELINA enables autonomous target tracking after launch, allowing helicopters to disengage immediately and reducing exposure to enemy air defences. The missile features top-attack capability, striking the weaker upper armor of tanks and making it highly effective against vehicles protected by composite and reactive armor. With its stand-off strike range, high precision, and strong penetration, HELINA strengthens India’s ability to neutralize armored threats across varied terrains, including plains, deserts, and mountainous regions, reinforcing the nation’s self-reliance and battlefield dominance in modern conflicts.

Design & Technology of HELINA Missile

HELINA is equipped with an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker, which allows the missile to autonomously track and engage targets after launch. This fire-and-forget capability reduces pilot workload and improves survivability of the launch platform. The missile features top-attack and direct-attack modes, enabling it to strike the most vulnerable areas of modern tanks, including those protected with composite and reactive armor.

Operational Role of HELINA Missile

  1. Destruction of Enemy Tanks and Armored Vehicles:
HELINA is primarily employed to accurately engage and destroy modern main battle tanks and armored vehicles, significantly reducing the enemy’s armored combat capability.

  2. Neutralization of Fortified Positions and Bunkers:
With its high-penetration warhead and precision guidance, HELINA can effectively destroy fortified enemy positions, bunkers, and hardened defensive structures.

  3. Support to Offensive and Defensive Ground Operations:
The missile provides critical firepower support to ground forces during both offensive advances and defensive operations, enhancing overall battlefield effectiveness.

  4. Anti-Armor Strike Missions from Attack Helicopters:
Designed for helicopter launch, HELINA enables attack helicopters to conduct stand-off anti-armor strikes while remaining outside the effective range of enemy air defences.

  5. Rapid Response Against Armored Breakthroughs:
HELINA allows quick reaction to enemy armored thrusts, helping to halt or disrupt breakthroughs before they can threaten key positions or formations.

  6. Enhanced Close Air Support (CAS) and Battlefield Shaping:
By integrating precision anti-armor capability with close air support missions, HELINA plays a vital role in shaping the battlefield, weakening enemy defenses, and enabling successful joint operations.

Combat Effectiveness of HELINA Missile

With an operational range of 7–8 km, HELINA provides attack helicopters with a powerful long-range precision strike capability, allowing engagement of armored targets from stand-off distances. The missile is equipped with a tandem HEAT warhead, specifically designed to defeat Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) and penetrate the advanced composite protection of modern main battle tanks. Its high accuracy, enabled by an imaging infrared seeker and fire-and-forget guidance, ensures a high kill probability while minimizing exposure of the launch platform. Combined with its strong lethality and top-attack capability, HELINA significantly enhances India’s anti-armor warfare capability and serves as a critical force multiplier in modern battlefield operations.

Importance of HELINA Missile

  • Strengthens India’s air-to-ground anti-armor strike capability.

  • Enables attack helicopters to destroy enemy tanks and armored vehicles from stand-off distances.

  • Enhances battlefield survivability by allowing helicopters to disengage immediately after launch.

  • Plays a key role in combined arms operations, supporting ground forces during offensive and defensive missions.

  • Contributes to India’s self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in advanced missile and defence technologies.

  • Provides effective anti-armor capability across diverse terrains, including deserts, plains, mountains, and high-altitude regions.

Advantages of HELINA Missile

  • Fire-and-Forget Capability: Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker allows autonomous target tracking after launch, reducing pilot workload.

  • Top-Attack Mode: Strikes the weaker upper armor of tanks, increasing lethality against modern armored vehicles.

  • High Accuracy and Precision: Advanced guidance ensures a high probability of target destruction.

  • Stand-Off Engagement: Allows helicopters to engage targets from safe distances beyond enemy air defence range.

  • Effective Against Modern Armor: Capable of defeating composite and reactive armor.

  • Helicopter Integration: Designed specifically for launch from attack helicopters, enhancing aerial combat effectiveness.

  • Operational Flexibility: Suitable for both offensive and defensive missions in varied battlefield conditions.

Limitations of HELINA Missile

  1. Dependence on Helicopter Platforms:
HELINA requires attack helicopters for deployment, limiting its use when helicopter availability is restricted due to weather, terrain, or maintenance constraints.

  2. Relatively Limited Warhead Size:
Compared to larger strategic missile systems, HELINA carries a smaller warhead, restricting its effectiveness to tactical anti-armor and bunker targets.

  3. Vulnerability in Contested Airspace:
Although HELINA itself is highly capable, the launch helicopters may be exposed to enemy air defence systems in heavily defended environments.

  4. High System Cost:
The use of advanced imaging infrared seekers and sophisticated guidance technologies increases the overall cost of the missile system.

  5. Line-of-Sight and Visibility Constraints:
Effective targeting can be affected by poor visibility, terrain masking, or adverse weather conditions, which may limit engagement opportunities.

Conclusion

HELINA represents a significant leap in India’s anti-tank missile capability by effectively combining precision, high lethality, and aerial strike flexibility. Its advanced fire-and-forget guidance, top-attack profile, and extended engagement range make it a highly effective weapon against modern main battle tanks and armored formations. As an integral part of India’s indigenous missile ecosystem, HELINA not only strengthens battlefield effectiveness and close air support operations but also reinforces India’s strategic self-reliance and technological advancement in advanced guided weapon systems.
