Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the concept of “Ik Onkar” meaning God is One. He propagated three core teachings – Naam Japna (remember God), Vand Chhakna (share with others) and Kirat Karni (earn by honest means). On Guru Nanak Jayanti, these teachings are widely highlighted in Gurudwaras through kirtan, shabad, discourses and spiritual gatherings. Many people participate in social improvement campaigns, blood donation camps, and langar sewa where food is prepared and served to every person without any discrimination. The distribution of free food “Langar” is considered the purest symbol of equality, unity and humanity. People visit Golden Temple Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Patna Sahib, Hazur Sahib Nanded and other major Sikh shrines to pay homage.
