UPSC CGSE 2027 Combined Geo-Scientist Preliminary Exam for 127 Posts is a good opportunity for candidates who have postgraduate qualifications in Geology, Geophysics, Chemistry, Physics and related scientific subjects. The Union Public Service Commission has announced 127 tentative vacancies for different Group A and Group B scientific posts under the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). The available positions include Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, Assistant Geologist, Assistant Geophysicist, Assistant Chemist, Hydrogeologist and other related posts.

Selected candidates will work in important scientific and technical areas such as geological surveys, groundwater exploration, geophysical investigations, mineral studies, chemical analysis and other field or laboratory-based activities. The exact duties will depend on the post and department. Candidates will be selected through the Combined Geo-Scientist Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test/Interview. The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the recruitment process and qualifying candidates will be called for the next stages.

  • Candidates should carefully check the post-wise qualification because the educational requirements are different for different posts.

    • Nationality: Candidates must satisfy the nationality conditions prescribed by UPSC.
    • Age Limit: Candidates must be between 21 and 32 years as on 01 January 2027.
    • Date of Birth: Candidates should have been born between 02 January 1995 and 01 January 2006.
    • Age Relaxation: Applicable relaxation is available for eligible SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, government employees and other categories according to UPSC rules.
    • Geology Posts: Relevant Master's degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, Earth Science and related subjects.
    • Geophysics Posts: Relevant Master's degree/M.Sc. in Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Applied Geophysics or related subjects.
    • Chemistry Posts: M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or the subjects specified for the particular post.
    • Hydrogeology Posts: Master's degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology, as applicable.
    • Candidates appearing in the final year of the required qualifying postgraduate examination may be allowed to apply provisionally, subject to the conditions given in the notification.
  • Candidates have to pay the prescribed examination fee while submitting the application.

    • General/OBC/EWS Candidates: ₹200/-
    • Female Candidates: No Fee
    • SC Candidates: No Fee
    • ST Candidates: No Fee
    • PwBD Candidates: No Fee
    • Payment can be made through Net Banking, Credit/Debit Card or UPI.
    • The fee is non-refundable as per the applicable UPSC rules.
  • The salary depends on whether the selected post is in Group A or Group B.

    • Group A Posts: Pay Level-10
    • Pay Scale: ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500
    • Group B Posts: Pay Level-8
    • Pay Scale: ₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100
    • Applicable Central Government allowances and benefits will be provided according to the relevant rules.
