National Integration Day - 19 November

India is known across the world for its rich diversity — a nation of many religions, cultures, languages, and traditions living together in harmony. To celebrate this unity and promote the message of national harmony, National Integration Day is observed every year on 19th November, the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only woman Prime Minister.

The day stands as a reminder that India’s true strength lies in its unity, peace, and mutual respect among all citizens.

History of National Integration Day

The idea of observing National Integration Day began as a tribute to Indira Gandhi (1917–1984), one of India’s most influential leaders. Known for her strong leadership, decisive governance, and efforts toward strengthening the nation’s internal and external stability, Indira Gandhi played a crucial role in promoting unity and national growth.

After her passing, the Government of India decided to commemorate her birth anniversary on 19th November as National Integration Day. The day aims to highlight her contribution to maintaining the social fabric of India, where people of different backgrounds live together with equality and brotherhood.

Meaning of National Integration

National Integration means bringing together people of different religions, castes, languages, and regions to form a united and harmonious nation. It emphasizes that despite our differences, we are one nation, one people, and one identity — Indians.

It helps reduce social and communal tensions and promotes peace, stability, and a sense of belonging among all citizens.
