Under the UPSC CGSE 2027 Notification, candidates will be considered for scientific posts such as Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, Assistant Geologist, Assistant Geophysicist, Assistant Chemist, Scientist 'B' and Assistant Hydrogeologist. The vacancies are divided into 111 posts in GSI and 16 posts in CGWB. The vacancy numbers are tentative and may change according to government requirements.

The examination has three stages. First, candidates have to clear the Preliminary Examination, which is scheduled for 10 January 2027. Those who qualify can appear for the Main Examination on 19 and 20 June 2027. The final stage is the Personality Test/Interview. The Preliminary Exam has two objective papers carrying a total of 400 marks, while the Main Exam has three descriptive papers for 600 marks.

Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates should carefully check the qualification for the specific post they want to select.
- Age Limit: Candidates must be between 21 and 32 years as on 1 January 2027.
- Candidates should have been born between 2 January 1995 and 1 January 2006.
- Age relaxation is available for eligible SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, government servant, defence and ex-servicemen candidates as per UPSC rules.
- Geologist/Assistant Geologist: Relevant Master's degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology, Earth Science and related subjects.
- Geophysicist/Assistant Geophysicist: Master's degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Exploration Geophysics, Marine Geophysics or related subjects.
- Chemist/Assistant Chemist: Master's degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and specified related chemistry subjects.
- Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist: Relevant Master's degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology or Hydrogeology.
- The qualifying postgraduate degree must be from a recognized university or eligible institution.
Application Fees:
The application fee for the UPSC CGSE Recruitment is:
- General/OBC/EWS male candidates: ₹200
- Female candidates: No fee
- SC/ST candidates: No fee
- PwBD candidates: No fee
- The fee can be paid through the payment methods allowed on the UPSC online portal.
Pay Scale:
The applicable salary depends on the post and service. The 2027 examination rules provide the following pay levels:
- Group A scientific posts: Pay Level 10 – ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500.
- This includes Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Scientist 'B' posts.
- Group B assistant posts: Pay Level 8 – ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100.
- This includes Assistant Geologist, Assistant Geophysicist, Assistant Chemist and Assistant Hydrogeologist.
- Selected candidates also receive applicable Central Government allowances and service benefits.
